Comets Blanked by Bees 3-0
The Solon Comets dropped a 3-0 decision to the Medina Bees in Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) play last night. Solon is now 0-1-1 overall and in GCC play.
The final score really didn’t tell the full story of the game. With the month-long delay at the beginning of the season, the Comets are still building their physical endurance and chemistry. The Comets gave fans a nice glimpse at how good this team could be once we catch up to our competitors.
The Comets came out to play. Just like in the Comets first game of the season against Strongsville, the offense had a good sustained attack throughout much of the first half. Solon showed a lot of creativity and had shots against a Medina defense that has only given up one goal all season. Unfortunately, the offense still needs to finish. Their shots were all over the target and touches still a bit off, but they played extremely well throughout the opening half.
The Comet defense looked very strong again too. The Bees play an up-tempo offense and move the ball around the field and the Comets’ defense did a great job defending against them, until six minutes left in the half. The Bees found the back of the net on a header goal to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was a different story. The Comets offense and midfield just could not maintain possession and fatigue and frustration seemed to take over. The game was in the Comets’ defense third of the field for much of the second half.
The Bees went up 2-0 on laser shot from the top of the box and sealed it on a breakaway chip into the goal with less than six minutes in the game.
The Comets return to Solon for Senior Night next Tuesday against GCC opponent Mentor.
JV Comets Fall to Bees 4-1
The JV Comets lost to the Medina Bees 4-1 on Tuesday. After a dominating opening win against Strongsville earlier in the week, Solon was looking to prove itself against a good Medina team. Unfortunately, the JV Bee’s game experience and stamina were too much for the JV Comets to handle.
After a good first 20 minutes, the JV Bees took over and scored three goals on Junior Goalkeeper Lucas He to close out the half including one on a penalty kick. He and his defense kept the team in the game with many great saves in the first half.
While the game could have been a low out, the JV Comets showed a lot of maturity in the second half and worked on their offensive attack and control. JV Comets Coach Richie Webb played his entire bench and worked on combinations and possession.
Junior Forward Pinak Chitnis continues to be an offensive spark for the JV Comets in the early season. Late in the second half, Chitnis stole a misplayed back pass to the Medina goalkeeper and scored to put the JV Comets on the scoreboard. It was Chitnis’ third goal of the season. Medina added one more goal a few minutes later to close the game out at 4-1.
The JV Comets are 1-1-0 overall and in league play.
