Comets End Regular Season with 1-0 Victory over Westlake

Comets End Regular Season with 1-0 Victory over Westlake

Last night the Solon Comets wrapped up their 2019 regular-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over the Westlake Demons.

Junior Andrew Messmer's acrobatic tip in front of the Westlake goal and score proved to be the difference. Junior Eric Nouafo set up the goal by winning the left baseline and hitting a beautiful cross just beyond the Demon goalkeeper that Messmer had to go up for to kick in. It was a really pretty goal. Messmer (6) booked ended the Comets season scoring the first and last goals of the regular season. He had four more in the middle.

Last night we saw a Comets team totally in control of the pace and ball throughout the game. With Senior Ethan Berkovitz out, Coach Greenhill's new midfield combination of Juniors Noah Jahnke, Xander Morales and Ben Moss did an excellent job controlling the ball and setting up the offense.

On offense, the best player on the Demon's team this year was their goalkeeper. Senior Billy Furlong, Nouafo, Messmer, Juniors Jake Moss and Kelan Zielinski and Sophomore Brandon Silverstein did it all on offense last night, but score. The boys showed a lot of creativity last night, they just couldn't finish.

Defensively it was one of the most dominating performances the Comets have had all season. The Demons did not have any real opportunities. Seniors Dylan Sussman and Ethan Abraham and Junior Ryan Funderburg were not only controlling the defense, but came up on offense too. Sophomore Aaron Kaiser seems to be gaining confidence in back every game. He played very well last night.

It was really impressive to watch the defense and midfield play keepaway with the Demons for much of the second half. The Demons couldn't attack, because they simply didn't have possession. The defense and midfield continued to move the ball from side-to-side and back when needed to Junior goalie Zach Baldwin. It was good to see a team confident in their ball control that didn't rush or make any mistakes.

The boys finish the year at 10-5-1, fourth in the GCC and seeded #2 in the Solon Regional District. All in all, not bad at all. By comparison, last year's team was 10-3-3 at the end of the regular season.

Coach Greenhill's Men of the Match were Xander Morales and Ben Moss. Really great job last night controlling the middle of the field.

The Comets will be watching the outcome of the Cuyahoga Falls -Kenston game at 7pm on Wednesday in Cuyahoga Falls. Make plans now to cheer on the Comets at 6pm at Solon next Saturday. The boys have a week to work on strategy and to let bumps and bruises heal before we see just what we're made of for the playoffs.

JV Comets Fall Short of 11 Wins on the Season

The JV Comets fell a goal short of 11 wins on the season after tying Westlake at 1 all. The boys again had opportunities to win this one but just couldn’t seem to finish and put the ball in the back of the net. Westlake went up early 1-0. The JV Comets continued their attack and set up many opportunities, but each time came up empty. As he has several times this season, Junior Nick Satary scored early in the second half to tie it up. It seems when the JV Comets need a goal, Satary finds a way.

The JV Comets finish the season at 10-4-2. Well done boys.
