Comets Senior Go Out with 5-0 Bang!
Comets Senior Go Out with 5-0 Bang!
On Senior Night the Comets and their Seniors delivered a 5-0 win over the Elyria Pioneers to go 9-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC). The Comets finish in 4th place in the GCC this season, after being co-Champions last year.
On a night of celebrations, the Comets Seniors went out with a bang. Comets Coach Ryan Greenhill started all of his Seniors: Ethan Abraham, Ethan Berkovitz, Billy Furlong, Josh Pollock and Dylan Sussman. Jacob Hong did not play because of a season-ending injury. The Seniors made the most of their final start together with several memorable moments.
The Senior fireworks started just 13 seconds into the game, when Furlong sprinted down the left side of the Pioneer’s box and put a beautiful strike into the corner of the goal. It was the fastest goal scored this season and could have been the fastest in Comets’ history. Furlong and his fast feet and quick shot have hit the back of the net many times the past four years. It was fitting that Furlong started the Comets off with a 1-0 lead.
Next it was Pollock (1), who waited all year to get his start and he made it memorable with his first goal of the season to put the Comets up 2-0 with 30 minutes to go in the first half. Abraham was next when he took a long free kick from about half field and put it on goal where Junior Forward Andrew Messmer (5) ran onto it and scored to give the Comets at 3-0 lead at halftime.
As the second half began, Pollock was not done yet. Just 40 seconds into the half, Pollock found Berkovitz (13) at the top of the Pioneer’s penalty box and scored. It was Pollock’s first assist of the season and it put the Comets up 4-0 with 39 minutes to go.
Furlong (5) also wasn’t done celebrating Senior Night on the field. He got loose on the left side of the Pioneers’ goal and put a shot off the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Comets finished out the scoring with a 5-0 lead.
While Sussman didn’t break into the scoring column on Senior Night, he and the Comets defense shut down the Pioneers holding them to only a few shots on goal all night. Sussman has been the leader of the defense all season. With the lead 5-0, Greenhill made sure everyone got playing time including Junior Defender Josh Goodman who has been sidelined with a knee injury all season. Combining on the win and shutout were Junior Goalkeeper Zachary Baldwin and Sophomore Ethan Smith. The shutout was the sixth clean sheet of the season.
Greenhill named Pollock, with a goal and an assist on the night, the Man of the Match. The Comets will finish their regular season against Westlake on Saturday. The Solon Comets earned a #2 seed in the 2019 OHSAA Boys Soccer Tournament. The Comets first game will be against the winner of the Cuyahoga Falls-Kenston game at 6pm on Saturday, October 19 at Solon. If the Comets win, Solon will host the next playoff game at 7pm on Wednesday, October 23.
JV Comets Earns 10th Win of the Season
Not surprisingly the JV Comets’ offense was on full display as they put up a 6-0 victory against the Pioneers on Thursday. The win was the team’s 10th this season. The JV Comets will be going for a record 11 wins on Saturday against the Westlake Demons.
As he has all season, Sophomore David Headen put the JV Comets on the board with a nice goal scored from the top of the box. Only a few minutes later Sophomore Pinak Chitnis made a nice pass to Headen who put it away for his second goal. The JV Comets were up 2-0 at halftime.
The second half was all JV Comets. Sophomore Defender Mark Groff buried a penalty kick to give the JV Comets a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Midfielder Alex Rosen helped score the next two goals. Rosen’s beautiful corner kick landed right on Sophomore Jack Riley’s head to put the Comets up 4-0. Rosen took it in himself and beat the goalkeeper for his own goal and the JV Comets were up 5-0. After assisting in the first half, Chitnis scored to give the JV Comets a convincing 6-0 victory. Sophomore Goalkeepers Ethan Smith and Lucas He combined on the win and shutout.
JV Comets Coach Richie Webb named Riley and Rosen as his Men of the Match. The JV Comets close out their season at Westlake on Saturday.
