Woodridge Invitational

Woodridge CVNP Invitational

There are few more beautiful places to run in northeast Ohio than Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  Although the terrain did not provide many opportunities (or in our case any opportunities...) for many season bests or personal records, we had perfect racing weather and a fun venue in front of us.  For the first time this season we did not have any season bests or personal records, but we did have a lot of solid efforts.  The Woodridge coaching staff will admit, the course is both challenging and slightly longer than 5K.  When reflecting on your individual performance this week I would think about, how you competed against your teammates and how you competed against runners from other schools we've seen multiple times this season (Hudson, Kenston, Twinsburg, and Nordonia).

Overall we performed fine.  The Comets finished at the front of the middle pack in both races.  When looking at the varsity results, note Hudson and Kenston did the same thing we did in resting their top 8 - 10 runners.  I would have liked to see us run with a little bit more aggression.  This does not apply to everyone but it applies to enough people to talk about it whole group.  After talking with many of you after race it seemed like too many of us went into the race with the mentality, "this is a tough course, I won't run a PR, so I'm going to back down when I feel uncomfortable because this is a tough course."  That's a natural reaction.

To grow as a program, we need to continue working on letting go of what we cannot control.  We cannot control weather, course setup, or the actions of other people.  We can control how we react to situation.  We can control how we push ourselves when we are outside of our comfort zone.  The course was the same for every team at the starting line.  Just because the odds of you running a personal record are lower, doesn't mean it's acceptable to use that as an excuse for not pushing yourself to run your absolute best.
