Solon High School Moves to Remote Learning

Dear Solon High School Families,

Since we returned to in-person classes last month, everyone here at Solon High School has worked tirelessly to keep students and staff safe and preserve in-person learning for those students who most need and want it. Over the past two weeks, however, we have seen dramatic increases in the number of students and staff testing positive for COVID-19 or needing to quarantine due to a close contact exposure to someone who tested positive. The majority of these exposures occurred outside of the school environment.

Staffing issues have been exceptionally challenging for us at SHS due to the complexity of high school schedules. With so many more classes to cover at the high school level, even a few staff absences start a domino effect. Even though teachers in quarantine can teach from home, we must have simultaneous supervision in classrooms as well. I’ve had to assign a number of classes to meet in large study hall areas this week just to meet that supervision demand.

Today we hit the tipping point. Eight additional staff members began 14-day quarantines this afternoon because of close contact with a person who tested positive. This is just not sustainable.

So, beginning Monday, Solon High School will shift to all-remote learning until the end of winter break. We will reassess the return to in-person classes in January in the coming weeks and keep you informed along the way. Please be sure to read through the end of this message for important information regarding schedules for classes and mid-term exams.

Most importantly, we wish you and your family continued good health. Please heed the public health warnings to scale back your Thanksgiving celebrations this year. Additionally, be sure to enforce the 10 p.m. curfew with your SHS students. The individual actions each of us take now will have a lasting impact not only on the health of our community and those we care about, but also on our ability to return to in-person classes and activities as soon as possible in the new year.

SHS Government students will take their end-of-course exam on Wednesday, December 16, from 7:45 - 9:30 a.m. here at school. Individual IIRR teachers will communicate with parents and students next week about the daily schedule for IIRR students after Thanksgiving break.
