Second Semester Plans

Dear Solon Schools Families and Staff,
Following Thanksgiving break, our case levels, while higher than we would like, are remaining steady for now. We hope this trend continues. Since Saturday, we have had 17 students and 3 staff members test positive for COVID-19, with 49 students and staff members needing to quarantine. Unfortunately, many of these cases were the direct result of at-home gatherings that then impacted in-person activities. Please continue to report cases and close contact exposures of COVID-19 to your child’s principal immediately EVEN IF YOU ARE REMOTE to ensure we are working with accurate case data at all times.
With our current staffing levels, and barring any sudden absences or significant spikes in cases and quarantines, we will be able to maintain in-person instruction for our students still attending on campus through next week.
Based on the submitted family survey responses for in-person vs. virtual learning, our plans for second semester are as follows:
PK-4: In-Person 5 Days a Week. Family in-person learning choices for students in grades PK-4 were slightly higher than first semester but will not require a change to our current instructional model. Students attending in-person will do so 5 days a week with virtual learners participating as they are now.
5-6: Modified Hybrid Schedule 4 Days a Week In-Person, 1 Day Virtual. Responses from Orchard families would increase the number of students attending in person beyond what is required to maintain our minimum distancing. To maximize in-person learning for these students, we will move to a 4 day-a-week on-campus model. Students will attend in person 4 days a week and 1 day virtually. This will enable us to reduce the number of students in each classroom daily for distancing and safety. Details, as well as student assignments for virtual days, will be communicated to families directly by the building administration next week.
7-12: Maintain Current 2-Day In-Person Hybrid Schedule. The model at SMS and SHS remains unchanged. During the first semester, we found the 2-day hybrid allowed for more students to stay in person due to distancing and more limited quarantining.
We are aware some families selected in-person instruction intending to opt for virtual instruction in January. We understand a full semester commitment is difficult, but we urge you to contact your building principal soon to let them know if your child will actually be a virtual learner. To balance class sizes based on family choices, some classroom assignment changes may be necessary. These changes will be communicated to you by building administrators next week. Hopefully, a vaccine and following public health recommendations will enable us to alter our plans sooner, but we must plan for our current reality.
