In today's world, female representation in government and politics is limited and scarce. In fact, women represent only 27% of the members in Congress, 24% of the members in the Senate, serve as Heads of State or Government in only 22 countries and 119 countries have never had a woman leader. That means that at the current rate the world is moving at, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years (according to the United Nations). Fortunately, in recent years, Solon High School has shifted to putting a greater emphasis on promoting equity and equality for all minorities on the basis of gender, race and sexuality. The creation of a "Women In Politics & Debate" club would serve to further this mission that the school has by giving women a better chance of succeeding in public speaking, debating, and politics. This would also provide them with the skills, resources and encouragement that they need to improve and feel confident expressing their passions in these areas. Overall, by encouraging more women to go into government and politics, we can get more representation in the future.
