Summer Keyboarding Practice for Solon Middle School Students Friday, June 20, 2014
Solon Middle School provides a Google App for students to practice keyboarding skills over the summer. Students in 7th and 8th grade can access the online Typing Club program to help them learn and improve their typing speed and accuracy using the correct finger placement. The program provides a series of lessons that move from basic to advanced skills.
Students have easy access to this application at home and school through their Solon Google account. Students simply need to log in to their Google account at home, click on the "Apps" icon and then click on the "Typing Club" app.

PTA School Supply Sale for Solon Middle School Seventh and Eighth Grade Students
The Solon Middle School PTA provides on online school supply order program as a convenience for families.
The voluntary program allows families to place an order for needed supplies and have the supplies delivered directly to their homes. The SMS 2014-15 order program through Innisbrook is under way now and continues through July 28.
To place an order online for home-delivered supplies, go to www.ordermypack.com and enter the SMS school code: 103510.
Please note that families may select the pack with or without a flash drive.

Solon Students Bring Home Trophies from Future Problem Solving International CompetitionMonday, June 16, 2014
Solon students won second and third place awards at the Future Problem Solving International Competition at Iowa State University over the weekend.
Solon Middle School seventh grader Lea Kim earned second place honors for Scenario Writing in the middle division.
Solon High School’s ninth grade team – Hannah Edelman, Madeleine Burland and Connor Strobel – placed third in Global Issues Problem Solving also in the middle division.
“Approximately 2,000 students from 12 nations and most of the 50 states competed in the International Competition this year,” said Solon FPS advisor Sabrina Tirpak. “I am so proud of our Solon student competitors. They all worked hard and represented our school admirably.”
Solon Science Olympiad Teams Win State Championships AgainThursday, May 08, 2014
Solon Science Olympiad teams celebrate their state tournament wins. Both the High School and Middle School teams captured the state championship in their respective divisions. This is the seventh straight year the Solon Middle School team is the Ohio state champion and the third consecutive year for Solon High School. The teams travel to the national competition in Orlando, Florida, May 15 to defend their national titles.

The Solon High School summer reading list for 2014 is hot off the press! This listing includes all of the books students will need to read during the summer in preparation for many of the high school’s English and social studies classes in the fall of 2014. The books marked with an * will have an accompanying assignment to be completed during the summer. Those assignments will be posted on the school website in June.
All of the books on the summer reading list are available at any book store, but for students’ convenience, they may submit the form below and the Solon Academic Boosters Club will order the books and have them ready for pick up before the end of the school year.
Orders and payment need to be returned to the high school book store or the middle school office by Wednesday, April 23. Checks should be made payable to the Solon Board of Education. Cash is also accepted.Resources: SHS Summer Reading List 2014
Solon Middle School Students Capture Top Honors at Regional Science Fairs; 11 Qualify for State Science DayTuesday, April 01, 2014
Solon Middle School eighth grade students earned many of the highest honors at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State University in March, including the top award for all students in grades seven and eight. The students’ science fair projects were judged at the competition several times by area science professionals.
Pranav Iyer was the grand prize winner among all seventh and eighth grade science students at this year’s Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair. Pranav’s science project also earned first place in the Health and Medicine division and additional honors from the American Statistical Association - Cleveland Chapter, Broadcom Masters, Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and the Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers Award for Health and Medicine Science.
Alice Wu won first place in environmental science. Her project also earned honors from the American Meteorological Society, Broadcom Masters, First Energy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps.
Change of Dates for Ohio Achievement Assessments for Solon Students in Grades 3-8Thursday, February 27, 2014
Given the unseasonably harsh winter and accompanying unusual number of calamity days school districts around Ohio have been forced to use this year, the Ohio Department of Education is extending the testing window for Ohio Achievement Assessments by one week. The Solon Schools are taking advantage of this permitted flexibility and will adjust our testing schedule by one week.
Solon students in grades 3-8 will now take Ohio Achievement Assessments the week of May 5. This schedule change will benefit students as it will provide a week of additional instruction.
The new schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, May 6: Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 – OAA Reading
Wednesday, May 7: Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 – OAA Math
Thursday, May 8: Grade 5, 8 – OAA Science
Please check your calendars now to see if you have any doctor, orthodontist or other appointments scheduled during the week of May 5. We ask that you reschedule those appointments if they are during the school day and avoid any other unnecessary absences that week.
