Parents and students invited to participate in town hall forum on 'Heroin in the Suburbs' on October 24 at 7 p.m.Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Judge Astrab speaking at Solon SADD meeting this fall.
Solon Schools’ parents and students are encouraged to attend a community forum on the growing problem of “Heroin in the Suburbs” at the Solon Community Center on Thursday, October 24, at 7 p.m.
Sponsored by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Astrab and supported by the Solon High School PTA and the Solon chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, the town hall panel discussion is aimed at raising awareness of the growing suburban heroin epidemic and informing parents how to keep their families free from the influence of this addicting drug.
The impetus for this series of town hall meetings has been the number of heroin cases Judge Astrab said he has presided over in his courtroom, the majority of them involving young people in the suburbs. A recent trend emerging in drug use among young people shows a transition from prescription pain pills to the less expensive – but more highly addictive – option of heroin.
“I can do what I can as a judge from the bench, but by the time a user gets to my courtroom, it’s often too late,” explained Judge Astrab, a 1989 Solon High School graduate.

Solon students invited to show their artistic talents in the PTA Reflections programThursday, October 03, 2013
Solon students are encouraged to unleash their creativity and submit original works of art for the national PTA Reflections art program. The Reflections program offers students an opportunity to explore their artistic talents and create works of art for fun and recognition.
“PTA is a strong advocate arts education,” said JoEllen Weingarten, Solon’s PTA Reflections chair. “We saw an increase in submissions for the program last year and were thrilled to learn that two Solon students were recognized at the national level. Through the program this year, we are hoping again to tap into the talent of our Solon students.”
This year’s theme is BELIEVE, DREAM, INSPIRE. Students may submit artwork incorporating this theme in six categories: Visual Arts, Film Production, Literature, Dance Choreography, Music, Composition and Photography.
Artwork is judged locally in grade divisions. All participants will be recognized. The work of 22 local Solon winners will move on to the state competition, and the state winners advance to the National PTA finals.
