Welcome to SMS PTA! Opportunities to Get Involved for 2016-17!Thursday, August 04, 2016
The Solon Middle School PTA welcomes you to SMS!
Since students are only at our school for two years, we are frequently in need of new parents to serve in the role of committee chairs. For this year, we are looking for leaders for the following committees:
CONCESSIONS – We need motivated volunteers to learn the ropes on making purchases to stock the school’s concession stands and organizing volunteers to sell the snacks and drinks to students during after school activities.
STAFF APPRECIATION – Several times a year, we treat our staff to fun items or goodies from the PTA to thank them for the work they do for our children. We need help organizing donations and setting up tables during school hours.
REFLECTIONS – Reflections is an Ohio PTA art contest. This school committee leader would promote the art contest for our students here at SMS, collect the entries from our students and deliver them to our district committee chairs at the Solon Board of Education.
Solon Launches One2One Technology Program; Student Chromebook Pick Up by Grade Level is August 8-12Tuesday, August 02, 2016
Solon is launching a new technology initiative to provide access to personal computing devices for high school and middle school students at school and home. This “One2One” program directly supports the educational goals and objectives for improving student achievement outlined in the district’s strategic plan.
Beginning in August, all students in grades 7-10 will receive personal Chromebooks to support their learning at home and school. A Chromebook has the shape of a traditional laptop and uses Google’s Chrome operating system and cloud storage to connect students to the Internet wherever Wi-Fi is available.
Today’s students are digital natives and it is critical that their educational environment keep pace to support a blend of digital and traditional learning platforms and best practices. This includes 24/7 access to technology tools to master 21st century skills that better position students for success in college and the workforce. Solon’s One2One program will provide seamless integration with Google classroom, an online tool and learning environment students have already been using.

Solon Middle School Fall Sports RemindersThursday, July 28, 2016
Fall sports begin soon. All Solon student athletes must register on Final Forms, and submit an up-to-date physical form to the school prior to participating in practices or tryouts.
All fall sport start dates are posted here on the home page under News and Notes.
Practices are usually held every day, and once school starts, they are typically held after school. Parents should arrange for rides for their children promptly when practice ends.
Instructions for Final Forms, the online system for submitting all athletic forms are posted below. Access the Final Forms site via the Solon Athletics home page. A link is posted below.
Every student athlete must have a physical form on file with the school prior to any practice or tryout. These forms are good for one year of participation.
The physical form can also be found on the Solon Athletics Sports Document page. Only pages 3 and 4 need to be turned into the school. Please drop off the form or send it to Solon Middle School and mark it to the attention of Shawn Surdy, SMS athletics faculty manager.

2016 Vaccination Requirement Reminders for 7th GradersFriday, June 10, 2016
As a reminder, the Ohio Department of Health has revised immunization requirements for the 2016-17 school year. All students entering the 7th grade are now required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine and one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) prior to the start of school on August 16. Most health care providers are already well aware of these requirements and students are typically up to date. However, families must have the proper immunization records on file in the school clinic. Please check your child’s records to be sure that he or she has already received the Tdap and meningococcal vaccines and forward documentation from your child’s health care provider that includes the immunization date.
If your child has not yet received the Tdap and meningococcal vaccines, please contact your child’s doctor or the Cuyahoga County Health Department to make an appointment as soon as possible.
If you already have a copy of your child’s immunization record that documents the Tdap and meningococcal dose dates, you may send it to the school now.
Summer Reading For 7th and 8th Grade StudentsFriday, June 10, 2016
In our efforts to create life-long readers and continue to build strong reading skills, students entering 7th and 8th grade at Solon Middle School are expected to read independently over the summer. Each student is required to read one nonfiction book and one fiction book of his or her choice.
SMS language arts teachers encourage students to read texts that are of interest to them and appropriate (not too easy, not too difficult) in terms of reading level. Due to the mature content in some books – including many books written specifically for young adults – we encourage parents to be active in the selection process. Fortunately, many great websites exist that can assist in the selection process, most of which provide summaries as well as reviews written by teen readers.
The reading students do over the summer should be of value and worthwhile to them, so student choice is important.
The language arts team looks forward to continuing to work with students and parents to foster this appreciation of reading.
Among the helpful websites for student reading choices are: Some helpful websites:
Summer Construction Impacts SMS EntranceTuesday, June 07, 2016
Summer is construction and maintenance season in Solon. Several projects are already under way, including several at Parkside Elementary and Solon Middle School. The construction will impact the middle school main entrance.
Visitors to Solon Middle School will need to buzz at the north doors by the main parking lot at the middle school (facing the community park).
Thank you for your support as we continue these necessary upgrades to our buildings.
