Change of Dates for Ohio Achievement Assessments for Solon Students in Grades 3-8Thursday, February 27, 2014
Given the unseasonably harsh winter and accompanying unusual number of calamity days school districts around Ohio have been forced to use this year, the Ohio Department of Education is extending the testing window for Ohio Achievement Assessments by one week. The Solon Schools are taking advantage of this permitted flexibility and will adjust our testing schedule by one week.
Solon students in grades 3-8 will now take Ohio Achievement Assessments the week of May 5. This schedule change will benefit students as it will provide a week of additional instruction.
The new schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, May 6: Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 – OAA Reading
Wednesday, May 7: Grade 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 – OAA Math
Thursday, May 8: Grade 5, 8 – OAA Science
Please check your calendars now to see if you have any doctor, orthodontist or other appointments scheduled during the week of May 5. We ask that you reschedule those appointments if they are during the school day and avoid any other unnecessary absences that week.

Parents and students invited to participate in town hall forum on 'Heroin in the Suburbs' on October 24 at 7 p.m.Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Judge Astrab speaking at Solon SADD meeting this fall.
Solon Schools’ parents and students are encouraged to attend a community forum on the growing problem of “Heroin in the Suburbs” at the Solon Community Center on Thursday, October 24, at 7 p.m.
Sponsored by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Astrab and supported by the Solon High School PTA and the Solon chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, the town hall panel discussion is aimed at raising awareness of the growing suburban heroin epidemic and informing parents how to keep their families free from the influence of this addicting drug.
The impetus for this series of town hall meetings has been the number of heroin cases Judge Astrab said he has presided over in his courtroom, the majority of them involving young people in the suburbs. A recent trend emerging in drug use among young people shows a transition from prescription pain pills to the less expensive – but more highly addictive – option of heroin.
“I can do what I can as a judge from the bench, but by the time a user gets to my courtroom, it’s often too late,” explained Judge Astrab, a 1989 Solon High School graduate.
