Boys Soccer Game Notes for the Solon Comets – Brunswick Blue Devils
The Solon Comets return home tonight (Tuesday) for a league game against the Brunswick Blue Devils. Game time is 5pm for JV and 7pm for Varsity.
The 2016 edition of the Brunswick Blue Devils Varsity Soccer team (2-0-2) has Coach Ben Dotson excited. The team has 12 returning lettermen and has won more than 10 games each of the past three years. A 10+ wins this year would mark the most successful four years in the team’s history. The team is looking to improve from a disappointing ending to its 2015 campaign, which ended with four straight losses.
The Blue Devils defense is anchored by three-year starter, Senior Goalkeeper Gavin Leindecker who recently earned his first shutout of the year over rival Strongsville 2-0. Joined by Leindecker are Senior Forward Ben Clouse and Junior Forward Nick Felician who combined for 25 goals last year. Felician currently leads the team with four goals. Brunswick has wins this year over Padua and Strongsville and ties against North Canton Jackson and Fairview Park.
The Comets (0-3-1) just finished their busiest week of the season with games against Shaker Heights, Saint Ignatius and North Olmsted. Coach Ryan Greenhill is looking for the team to possess the ball more to control the flow of the game, while correcting the defensive mistakes that have led to goals.
Just as we saw in the preseason, the Comet attack is capable of extremely quick goals. While the Comets didn’t win against Saint Ignatius, they did score the first goal the Wildcats have given up this year and netted Solon’s first goal against them in the past five games.
For those of you who missed it, Sophomore Defender Ryan Guggenheim stole the ball and dribbled up the right sideline. He passed to Sophomore Forward Danny Myeroff who penetrated into the corner before centering the ball to Junior Midfielder Pranav Iyer who faked a shot and then hit sprinting Senior Midfielder Johnathan Margheret on the left side of the box who one touched the ball with a lightning strike into the back of the net. The Wildcat defense didn’t have a chance. The entire play took less than 25 seconds. It was perfection to watch and Marheret’s goal was the exclamation point to finish it off. Coach Greenhill believes there will be many more goals like this in coming games.
The Comets have several scoring threats but perhaps none bigger than Seniors Margheret and Drake Perry. Both are no strangers to the back of the net. Margheret is considering playing in college and is making visits now. He was a key member on a club team that finished among the top eight in USYSA Nationals this past summer. Perry also wants to play in college and is visiting Cleveland State, Mount Union and Wright State.
The Comets play a rematch of last Fall’s District Semifinal 5-2 win with Brecksville-Broadview Heights on Saturday. JV plays at noon and Varsity at 2pm. Be there and Go Comets!
