The Harlem Renaissance is a period in African-American history
that was full of innovation and change for many African-Americans. Events during the Harlem Renaissance have
influenced and affected the lives of many people today. This was a time period of fun and
expression. Although the renaissance
was over 70 years ago, this project will allow you to see and hear the sights
and sounds of
Your task
is to convince the Cleveland Museum of Art to consider a special exhibit on the
Harlem Renaissance. As a group, you
will create a PowerPoint presentation for your classmates that will display the
various parts you researched. You and
your teammates will prepare slides (using your own words) that relate to your specific area by addressing certain
research questions. In order to prepare for your presentation, you will join a
team and take on one of the roles listed below.
Your presentation must include
a) your individual research findings,
b) music and voice recordings,
c) photos that represent the Harlem Renaissance, and
d)
your efforts
to convince the CMA of an exhibit (to persuade them that they need one!). Also, your group members
should dress up for the presentation (dress-shirt/dress-pants and tie for the
guys; dress, skirt, or dress-pants for the girls). A bonus will be given to groups whose members all dress in
costume for the
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
Decide
what role each person will take in your group.
2.
Make
sure you understand your individual task and all parts of it. Analyze how your role relates to the other
group members.
3.
Once
you have completed your individual research, you must then as a group,
brainstorm and develop ideas for your PowerPoint presentation.
The following are the roles that you will
assume as you travel back in time through jthe Harlem Renaissance:
Historian:
Describe the Harlem Renaissance history and leadership.
How
did the HR come about? What was going
on in America at that time?
Select 2 African-American activists or influential African-American figures
from this time period. What changes did
they try to make, and how effective were they?
Find a speech or essay delivered or written
by one of the figures. Summarize the
piece, and utilize 3 quotes to show how this speech or essay reflects
the goals of the movement.
Poet/Writer: Describe the influence of writing on the
Harlem Renaissance, and the influence of famous writers/poets during this time
period.
Describe how literature played a big role during the HR.
Why is the HR remembered as one of the greatest literary movements? Why is it a big part of American history?
Describe the life and influence of at least 2 well-known writers/poets. For each, include a brief biography that
would describe his/her life and influence during the HR.
Present a poem written by ONE of the literary figures. How did social events influence the
subject/theme of the work?
Musician: Describe the music of the Harlem Renaissance
and some of its influential musical figures.
Describe
how music played a big role during the HR.
Why
is the HR remembered as one of the greatest musical eras? Why is it a big part of American history?
Describe the life and influence of at least 2 well-known musicians. One musician should be a singer, one an
instrumentalist. For each, include a
brief biography that would describe his/her life and influence during the HR.
Present a song written by ONE of the musicians. How did social events influence the subject/theme of the work?
You
are also responsible for providing all background music during your groups
presentation.
Artist: Describe the influence of art on the Harlem
Renaissance and those artists who had an influence on this period.
Describe
how art played a big role during the HR.
Why
is the HR remembered as one of the greatest American art movements? Why is it a big part of American history?
Describe the life and influence of at least 2 well-known artists. For each, include a brief biography that
would describe his/her life and influence during the HR.
Present a work by ONE of the artists. How
did social events influence the subject/theme of the work?
Salesman/Technician: Convince the Cleveland Museum of Art to include an
exhibit of the Harlem Renaissance.
Integrate slides.
Develop introductory and concluding slides
that address this topic.
Using
persuasive techniques, work with each members slides to incorporate a
convincing argument.
You
are also responsible for unifying the presentation and using the Rehearsed
Timing feature to run automatically. The
end result should look like it came from one author. All slides should be consistent with the same style (font,
background, bullets, colors). Slides
should flow continuously.
Responsible for a printed bibliography to be turned in on presentation day. Bibliography should include sources from
EACH group members set of slides (information, pictures, sound bytes). Use the SLATE CITATION MACHINE for MLA
format, which can be accessed through the Solon High School Media Center web
page.
PRESENTATION
INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
Your
presentation must have at least 18
PowerPoint slides with transitions.
2.
Your
presentation must equally address each of the four researched areas.
3.
Your
slides must include photos (which should be accessed from the internet. No clip art.)
4.
Your
slides must include sound bytes (music) that can be obtained from the Internet
or Mr. Sines outbox.
5.
Each
group member should have a voice recording that correlates with their
researched area.
6.
Be
sure to use your creativity. Remember you want the board to approve of
your ideas for an exhibit!
7. A typed group bibliography of all web-sites that are used in your presentation must be turned in on the day you present from the Salesman/Technician. This includes all sites used to obtain written information, sound bytes, and pictures.
**Remember to
use your own words (paraphrase) when putting together your report!**
