2016 Vaccination Requirement Reminders for 7th GradersFriday, June 10, 2016
As a reminder, the Ohio Department of Health has revised immunization requirements for the 2016-17 school year. All students entering the 7th grade are now required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine and one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) prior to the start of school on August 16. Most health care providers are already well aware of these requirements and students are typically up to date. However, families must have the proper immunization records on file in the school clinic. Please check your child’s records to be sure that he or she has already received the Tdap and meningococcal vaccines and forward documentation from your child’s health care provider that includes the immunization date.
If your child has not yet received the Tdap and meningococcal vaccines, please contact your child’s doctor or the Cuyahoga County Health Department to make an appointment as soon as possible.
If you already have a copy of your child’s immunization record that documents the Tdap and meningococcal dose dates, you may send it to the school now.
Summer Reading For 7th and 8th Grade StudentsFriday, June 10, 2016
In our efforts to create life-long readers and continue to build strong reading skills, students entering 7th and 8th grade at Solon Middle School are expected to read independently over the summer. Each student is required to read one nonfiction book and one fiction book of his or her choice.
SMS language arts teachers encourage students to read texts that are of interest to them and appropriate (not too easy, not too difficult) in terms of reading level. Due to the mature content in some books – including many books written specifically for young adults – we encourage parents to be active in the selection process. Fortunately, many great websites exist that can assist in the selection process, most of which provide summaries as well as reviews written by teen readers.
The reading students do over the summer should be of value and worthwhile to them, so student choice is important.
The language arts team looks forward to continuing to work with students and parents to foster this appreciation of reading.
